Sketches for large scale soft sculptures


 Here are scans of sketches of my ideas for future large scale figurative soft sculptures. These would be built up over armatures - I'm considering plumbing or electrical piping - with batting and polyfil. The skin will be made from different fabrics, with various surface treatments depending on the theme of the figure. I am expecting to start with muslin or over dyed fabrics.



I will be manipulating the fabrics and then embellishing once the body is built - just as I do with my current hand held dolls. I am also planning on using found objects, hand made and upcycled objects as "beads". Lots of hand work, naturally.

Shaman Spider Woman Bead Head Doll

This is the Shaman/Spider Woman doll I made as a very special wedding gift. I wanted to invoke the Native American connection to their wedding ceremony . Many of the items for the charms and trim are from vintage jewelry including a Kokopelli pin and road runner turquoise earrings that were my mother's. Some of the beads were new purchases, others from vintage necklaces taken apart. Many of the fabrics used in the patchwork over robe were given to me by my mother-in-law. She has a huge collection of different vintage fabrics that she has collected over the last 40+ years in her travels. I combined upholstery fabrics with antique embroideries, printed Indian silks and quilting cottons, including small scale liberty prints. New Dolls

This is a doll that I am sending to the raffle at Life Is Good in Portland, Oregon starting later this week. ... And here is the first photo of my latest doll that will be for sale. She has a darker complexioned face, is made of bright summery fabric and her charm says "Trust in Your Dreams".
